About OnCue
OnCue,
a division of the Youth
Singers of Calgary, is one of Canada’s premier a cappella
ensembles, and was launched in 1996. Youth
Singers is a 500-member choral organization that offers a comprehensive
training program for young people in choral singing, dance, and
theatre skills. OnCue is a flagship for the Youth
Singers program, incorporating tight harmony and showmanship
in each thrilling performance.
OnCue performs regularly across the province of Alberta,
in many venues ranging from private parties to corporate events
and local festivals. In May 2004, they were honoured to be one of
a dozen choirs selected from across Canada to be showcased at the
Association
of Canadian Choral Conductors’ biennial conference. Last
summer, OnCue traveled with the Youth
Singers on a concert tour of China.
OnCue released their first album, “Yakety”,
in 2001. They recently released an album of Christmas classics and
originals, entitled “Snow
Angels”. Both albums consist entirely of original arrangements
and compositions by OnCue members.
ONCUE MISSION & VISION STATEMENTS
OnCue is a Calgary-based, recreational, peer-run, vocal
performance group which is a division of the
Youth Singers
of Calgary. We are committed to a professional-quality, team-driven
product including
innovative repertoire, dynamic performances, original recordings,
and personal growth.
Our vision is to inspire our audiences and each other.
OnCue History & Alumni
OnCue was launched originally as InSync, a division of the Youth
Singers of Calgary, in 1996. A need was recognized for a small
group that could represent the Youth
Singers at smaller venues - corporate events and private parties
- where a larger YS division would be too big. InSync was designed
to meet this need, and to offer a new performance challenge to the
talented alumni of the Young Adult division (now called Act 3).
The first InSync year was very much a formative year, where we
were still defining our overall plan and structure. For three seasons
between 1997 and 2000, InSync was under the direction of Reid McLean
Wiest. Reid brought a lot of original repertoire to the group, and
led the decision to focus primarily on pop and jazz a cappella.
This focus has continued to the present.
Two seasons, from 2000 to 2002, were led by Dave Morton. Dave brought
a fresh level of musicianship, comraderie and humour to the group.
It was during his leadership that we decided to change the group
name to OnCue, to finally keep audiences from confusing us with
that “boy band”.
In May 2001, OnCue released their first album, “Yakety”,
consisting entirely of original arrangements and compositions by
Reid and Dave. This represented a peak in the group’s history,
as the shining achievement for the group’s members at the
time:
Tara Beagle
Jeremy Jones
Jocelyn Jones
Jeff Kuntz
Kelly Kuntz
Beth McLean Wiest
Reid McLean Wiest
Dave Morton
Jennifer Morton
Mike Smith
Karen Thomas
Chris Thompson
Monica Villasenor
In 2002, Dave Morton left OnCue to pursue other musical aspirations
and spend more time with his family. Dave’s decision seemed
to herald the winds of change, as four of the remaining women in
OnCue announced their first pregnancies. Karen, Beth, Jocelyn and
Kelly all had their first babies within 6 months of each other,
and if we were to keep singing together, a structural change was
needed.
For the 2002-03 season, it was decided to expand the group’s
membership to 20 singers. Direction was shared by Reid and Malcolm
Edwards. It was an enjoyable season, but a marked departure from
the previous vision and structure.
Reid resumed the directorship of OnCue in 2003. Partnering with
his wife, Beth, they decided to revive the vision of a smaller ensemble.
All the other singers from the time of “Yakety”
had decided to move on to other commitments. So OnCue experienced
a complete change of face, and a new fire for musical excellence,
showmanship, and achievement.
OnCue’s most recent achievement is the release of their second
album, “Snow Angels”, a collection of original Christmas
arrangements and compositions by Reid and former member, Dave.
